Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for New York City in Maiden Speech

In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
