Her Royal Highness's Traditional Festive Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The 1,600 guests will hear a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including award-winning actors.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The theme of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Performance and Potential

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
