Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
